Jesus has been condemned to be crucified and is given his cross to carry, while Caiaphas continues to scorn him.

Mark 15:20: And when they mocked him, he took off the purple robe and put his own garments on him, and they led him out to crucify him.

Jesus Takes Up His Cross

Jesus is forced to carry the cross, which represents the weight of all our crosses, on which he will die. He must have felt an immense, crushing weight as he first took it upon his shoulders. He begins to enter more deeply into our Human experience as he walks in the path of misery and suffering.
